Why Personalized Onboarding Process?
According to Patel & Mohanty (2023), personalization and customization in the onboarding process reduce employee turnover. The research shows that using technology and the trend of the virtual onboarding process has a great impact on the mode of remote work. Further, it was found that continuous learning and development and cross-functional partnerships build a positive organizational culture. Moreover, Blount (2022) states that mentoring is a highly touched and personalized training in the onboarding process. This motivates the employees and shortens the learning cycle. The study further explained that the personalized onboarding process reduces role ambiguity. Employees will have a clear view of their role.
Off The Topic - Additional Information on Employee Turnover
The employee or labour turnover is an indication many companies use to analyse the effectiveness of recruiting and other HR practices. The number of employees leaving will be calculated and the proportion with the number of employees working during a particular period.
Figure 1: Formula for Labour Turnover
Source: (Tutor2U,2018)
The labour turnover rate has been impacting organizations in many ways. For example, teacher turnover has been analysed by Allen, et al. (2018) and found that it has been impacting the schools in England. The effectiveness of schooling and the outcome of a pupil depends on the teaching style and the teacher. Finally, the research found that greater turnover with low effectiveness of teachers were affecting the schools a lot.
In the report of Steifo & Thomasson (2023), the key to maintaining excitement and self-confidence is the personalized experiences and social interactions in the Hybrid onboarding process. In the Hybrid onboarding process, social disconnection is one issue realized in the digital mode. However, it has been found through research that flexible work environments have increased through technology, remote working and work-life balance. Therefore, the report concludes to have a hybrid mode rather than promoting the digital onboarding process completely.
Figure 1: Gamified Smartphone Application designed for
the Onboarding Journey
Source: (Palmquist, 2023)
Surprisingly, Palmquist (2023) proposes a “Gamified” Onboarding process. This concludes that sharing a phone application with newly hired employees will make them complete tasks earning points or rewards. It is completely using digitalized methods during the onboarding process.
Real-Life Experience
I experienced something similar in my previous company using a platform instead of a phone application. We can earn points and batches which shows in a leaderboard. Some employees do this very seriously to learn stuff through this given training platform. I honestly did not check the points because it was not promoted by the company. They always mentioned that completing the task is what matters, not the points we earn.
However, it was easy for us to recall what we had learned using the same platform throughout our job role in that company. The employer could track the date, time and duration it took for us to complete a course. They did not select the best employer or anything through this reward scheme which made me feel to complete them but not to achieve any credits.
This platform and application can be used to provide personalized courses and gamified tasks. It can be the latest and the most updated option for employers to provide effective training in the onboarding process.
Moreover, Jeske & Olson (2022) also found that personalization,
customization and flexibility are required in the new onboarding processes. The
study states that new employees expect the onboarding interconnected with new
learning and career opportunities. Further, it states that it should be changed according to the mode of the onboarding process as remote work was practiced after in year 2020.
Conclusion
Most of the latest literature concludes that the personalized onboarding process benefits the company and the employee in many ways. The employee feels more comfortable and improves confidence through a personalized process of onboarding. Even though there are pros and cons to this method we can finally conclude that technology can be used in the onboarding process. Further, the literature states that mentoring is another best practice that provides personalized features to the onboarding process.

Agreed.
ReplyDeleteThis blog highlights that personalized onboarding processes yield benefits for both the company and the employee.
According to Thommason (2023) Customized onboarding fosters comfort and confidence among employees, often leveraging technology to achieve this.
Mentoring is also highlighted as an effective strategy within the onboarding process, offering personalized guidance and support.
Overall, the emphasis on personalization and the integration of technology and mentorship underscores the evolving approach to employee onboarding in contemporary organizational practices.
A good read!!
Thank Nalin. Yes, we can conclude the article as you have mentioned. Effective HR process has been developed through technology integration as well. Thommason (2023) has highlighted the importance of customizing the onboarding process. The Personalization makes the employee feel valued in a way because the organization has taken time to prepare special training and methods to warmly welcome. The onboarding process is not only welcoming but also making the employee familiarized with the organization. Patel , Mohanty (2023) explains Onboarding, also known as induction or orientation, integrates new employees into an organization, enhancing engagement, job satisfaction, and retention, making it a crucial aspect of employee experience.
ReplyDeleteAgreed with this Creative Article
Onboarding can significantly reduce employee turnover by making new hires feel welcome, supported, and connected to the company. Technology and virtual onboarding trends can personalize the onboarding experience, allowing companies to create tailored modules for each new hire. Mentorship and cross-functional partnerships foster a positive organizational culture, while hybrid onboarding combines in-person and virtual experiences to maintain excitement and self-confidence. Gamification can be a fun and engaging way to learn new information, but it should be meaningful and relevant to the new hire's role.
To personalize the onboarding process, companies should meet with new hires individually to discuss their goals and expectations, use technology to create personalized onboarding modules, provide opportunities for new hires to connect with team members and mentors, create a sense of community through events, activities, and online forums, and track their progress to ensure they feel confident in their abilities.
Who does not like Games, isn't it Deeshan? Majority would do, That is how a company can use this method to motivate newly recruited employees to use technology and achieve their targets. This method not only motivates but also gives a cultural background of the organization through these tasks. Achieving them will make them feel better and the organization can help them to get trained through this training process. This is what Palmquist (2023) has found in the study of gamification for the onboarding process.
DeleteWhy new hire onboarding needs to be structured?
ReplyDeleteScience has already proven that structured onboarding works. The Society of Human Resource Management shared in their guide Onboarding New Employees Maximizing Success the following figures:
*60% of organizations view effective onboarding as improving the time it takes before new hires become productive
*More than half of companies say onboarding leads to greater customer satisfaction and that employee retention rates have improved
*Without effective onboarding, half of all senior outside hires fail within 18 months in a new position
(Buchanan.M.,2023)
Thanks for sharing the information Fawaaz. I agree with your facts. Further, you can go through this study on Onboarding during COVID-19 by Scott et. al (2022) for an update on how onboarding has been impacting remote workers (You may find the link below). There are drawbacks and issues arising even when providing feedback during this process. The previous research has found the importance but we also should focus on the challenges during the pandemic situation in the onboarding process. One might question that we are not in that pandemic situation now but we never know. Moreover, figuring out what happened during that time and providing remote opportunities have been a trend for scholars recently.

ReplyDeleteEffective onboarding can substantially decrease employee attrition by ensuring that new employees experience a sense of belonging, assistance, and integration within the organization. The utilization of technology and virtual onboarding developments enables the customization of onboarding procedures, enabling businesses to generate customized learning components for each new staff member. The cultivation of mentorship and collaborations across different functions nurtures a favorable corporate ambiance, whereas hybrid onboarding merges in-person and virtual interactions to sustain enthusiasm and self-assurance. While gamification can serve as an enjoyable and captivating method for acquiring fresh knowledge, it is imperative that it remains pertinent and meaningful to the new employee's designated responsibilities.
That's right Hisshanthi. Thanks for reading and gaining knowledge through my article.
